Funeral Services Here on Saturday For J. Van Laar

Funeral services for John W. Van Laar (81) were held here Saturday afternoon at the home at 1:15 and at the Christian Reformed church at 1:30, with Dr. Herman Kuiper officiating. Burial was made at the Valley View cemetery. Mr. Van Laar died at his home here on July 6. He had been in poor health for some time.

Mr. Van Laar was born at Hattern, The Netherlands, on December 15, 1868, and came to the United States in 1907 at the age of 39. He first lived in Grand Rapids for a period of three years and in 1910 moved to Rock Valley. He resided in this area continuously since that year.

In October, 1921, he married Hattie Buxom and to the union eight children were born. His son, John, preceded him in death, having passed away on February 2, 1932. Survivors include his widow and seven children: Henry Van Laar, Rev. M. L. Van Laar, Rev. G. Van Laar, Mrs. A. H. Smit, Mrs. E. Holtrop, Helen and Henrietta.

Pallbearers included the following: N. De Ruyter, Gerrit Hoekstra, John De Kam, Leen Van Duyn, Herman S. Van Otterloo and Peter Swier.

The Cemetery Index entry for his wife Hattie gives her surname as Bloxum.

The children were actually those of John W. and his first wife, Detje (Zielhuis) Van Laar -- see her obituary, posted separately.
