Hawarden Independent April 21, 1994

Merle M. McMillan, 68, formerly Of Chatsworth, died Friday, April 15 1994, in Sioux City, after a long illness. Services were Monday at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden, with Susan G. Miller, Chaplain for Hospice of Siouxland, officiating Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery Hawarden. Visitation was Sunday at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home.

Merle was born May 7, 1925, in rural Akron, Union County, SD, son of Edward and Margaret (Nelson)
McMillan. He graduated from Akron High School in 1943, and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War He married Phyllis J. Kruse December 24, 1955, at Riverside Methodist Church, Sioux City. They lived in Peoria, IL, and Wichita, KS, before moving to Chatsworth. He worked in the warehouses of Palmer Candy and Hansen Glass and Paint, both of Sioux City. Later, he supervised transportation for Watson Wilson Transport and American Freight, where he worked for 18 years. He worked for K.C. Design in Sioux City, and retired in 1981. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2492 of South Sioux City.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Mark of Chatsworth; a daughter, Myrna and her husband Richard Strouse of Platte, SD; two brothers and their wives, Elmer and Genevieve McMillan of Hawarden, and Herbert and Dorothy McMillan of Ponca, NE; three grandchildren, Tracy and Tera Strouse of Platte, SD, and Ryan McMillan of West Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother and sister, Delmar McMillan and Genevieve Waterbury. Memorial donations may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland in Sioux City.
