Margaret Hodoway, 96, of Hawarden died Monday, March 14, at the Hawarden Community Hospital.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden with Father Edmond Adams officiating. Burial will be in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden. A Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m.Wednesday at the St. Mary's Parish Hall.Mrs. Hodoway, the former Margaret Theis, was born on December 25, 1897, at Currie, MN, the daughter of John and Susan (Koob) Theis. She later moved with her parents to Hawarden.
She married Harry Hodoway onSeptember 12, 1917, at Sioux City. The couple farmed their entire married life until 1963 when they retired to Hawarden. Mr. Hodoway died March 18, 1980. Mrs. Hodoway was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Guild and St. Theresa's Circle. She was past President of St. Mary's Guild. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 60 years, having served as Unit, County, District President, Department Vice-President, served as Girl State Counselor for 18 years, and was instrumental in starting the Christmas Basket Program and working with it for 50 years. She also was a volunteer at the Veteran Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls for many years. She was a member of the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary serving on many offices, working for many years in the Thrift Shop. Mrs. Hodoway was also past Sioux County Chairwoman for the Democratic Party. In 1987, she was chosen as the Hawarden Centennial Queen.
Survivors include one son, Robert, and his wife Marian of Hawarden; two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Madelyn) Corrie of Ida Grove, and Mrs. Gerard (Helene) Mauer of Setauket, NY; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Paul; and a brother John
