William H. Cain, for the past eleven years a resident of the Ireton and Hawarden communities, passed away at 12:15 last Friday morning at his home in Union county, South Dakota, northwest of Hawarden. Sixteen years ago Mr. Cain began to be troubled with cancer but through the ministrations of physicians he was able to obtain relief until about two years ago when cancer appeared on his hand. Last year he submitted to the amputation of his hand but the relief obtained was of but short duration. Other cancers appeared and slowly sapped his vitality. Two days before his death he contracted pneumonia and this hastened the end.

The funeral was held from the Ross Funeral Home at 2:30 Monday afternoon, conducted by Elder J.R. Nelson, assisted by M.N. Skadsheim. Elder Nelson preached the sermon. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.

William Henry Cain was the eldest son of James and Sarah Cain. He was born at Litchfield, Gracon County, Kentucky, November 14, 1865, and passed away March 18, 1932, at the age of 67 years, 4 months and 4 days. In July, 1892, he was united in marriage at Clarkson, Kentucky, with Betty Ann Witten. Ten children were born to this union, eight of whom are still living. One son, Omar, met his death by the explosion of dynamite at the age of 24; a daughter, Elsie, passed away five years ago at the age of 23. Besides the widow, he is survived by the following children; Moman of Clarkson, Kentucky; Mrs. Bess Hawkins of Hawarden; Lester Cain of Ireton; Charlie Cain of Hawarden; Leonard of Fountain; Wilber and Gilbert at home. He also leaves three sisters: Mrs. Manda Elliott, Mrs. Callie Williams and Mrs. Margaret Williams; and three brothers, John, Ed. and Martin Cain, all residing in Kentucky. He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren and other relatives.

Mr. Cain never united with a church but while living in Kentucky he and his family habitually attended the Baptist church. In 1921 he moved to Iowa. He farmed for six years near Ireton and on various places near Hawarden since that time. Mr. Cain was a respected member of the community, a good husband and a kind father. Amid sickness and suffering he struggled to maintain his home and provide for his family.
