Died: November 9, 2003Larry E. Cain, 66, Box Elder, died Sunday, November 9, 2003, at his home. Services were held November 14, at the Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home in Rapid City with the Reverend Keith McCraw officiating. Inurnment ceremony was conducted at the Black Hills National Cemetery on November 17.
Larry E. Cain was born on March 29, 1937 in Iowa City, the son of Wilbert and Elizabeth (Jensen) Cain. He grew up and attended school in Hawarden graduating from high school in May 1955. Larry then worked in the family upholstery business until he enlisted in the United States Air Force on August 7, 1957. He served for more than 30 years, attaining the Air Force’s highest enlisted rank, CMSgt, and retiring from active duty in August of 1987.
After his retirement from the Air Force, he continued his college education. In June 1992, he graduated cum laude from the National College in Rapid City, earning a bachelor’s degree in Applied Management. Upon his graduation, he went to work for the State Department of Health as Associate Administrator of Licensure and Certification in Pierre. He retired from the Department of Health in 2000.
He was a lifetime member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, serving as local chapter President and Regional President (Division 9--South Dakota, Nebraska, and Oklahoma) for many years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 315 in Box Elder, the 40/8, and The Retired Enlisted Association (Trea). During his AF career, Larry received numerous awards, medals and decorations and in 1991 he was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.
Survivors include his wife, Ramona (Rosenbaum) Cain; Rhonda Baker of Box Elder, Lt. Col Gregory M. Cain of Abilene, Texas, and Karen McIntyre of Kenosha, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren; brothers Bert Cain of Colman, Dan Cain of Ireton, Steve Cain of Beresford, and sister Deanna Lockhorst.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
