Father of Three Local Women Died in Hull Last Week
Funeral services were held last week Tuesday for John Albert Scholten of Hull, father of three Rock Valley women. He passed away after a lingering illness, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 28 days. Funeral services were held from the Sy Hogan home at Perkins and the First Reformed church at Hull with Rev. Wm. G. Jong in charge. Interment was in the Hope cemetery at Hull.
Pallbearers were: Richard Oostenink, Orville Kempers, John A. Scholten Jr., Faner Scholten, Alfred Schepel and Norman Hogan.
Mr. Scholten was born on the 20th day of November, 1868, at ZutpKen, Gelderland in the Netherlands. in the year 1872, being then three years of age, he came to America with his parents, settling first in Chicago, ILL. Ten years later in, 1882, the family came to Sioux county, settling first In Alton. Later the family moved to a farm 5 miles south of Hull and on Nov. 10, 1894, Mr. Scholten was united in marriage with Melena De Vries of Sioux Center, with whom he lived in happy wedlock just 10 days short of 54 years.
To this union seven children were born. They are: Gertie (Mrs. Henry Oostenink) of Hull; Sadie (Mrs. Gerrit Kempers) of Sioux Center; Al J. Scholten of Buena Park, Calif.; Germina (Mrs C. Ver Meer) of Rock Valley; Melena (Mrs. Sy Hoogan) of Hull; Jeannette (Mrs. Herman Brouwer) of Rock Valley; Caroline (Mrs. Paul Groeneweg) of Rock Valley. His wife, three brothers and two sisters as well as two grandchildren preceded, him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing one son, six daughters; six sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, two brothers, 28 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
