Former R. V. Grocer, Buried Here Recently Prominent at Sanborn

Dick Vander Woude, former Rocky Valley businessman, who left here in 1919 to
enter business in Sanborn. Funeral services were held Friday, June 26, at the Sanborn Funeral home and the First Reformed church, there, but interment was made at the Valley View cemetery, at Rock Valley.
Dick Vander Woude was the son of Sikke and Elizabeth Vander Woude, was born at Frarisker, in the Netherlands, March 3, 1882, and departed from this life Tuesday, June 23, 1953 at the Methodist Hospital in Sioux City, Ia., at the age of 71 years 3 months and 20 days being confined, to his bed of illness for 12 days. When he was one year old, his mother, passed away. He worked as a sailor on the North Sea from the years 12 to 18 and then he left Holland March 1, 1901, spending his 19th birthday on the ocean on his way to America.

On March 15, 1906 he was united in marriage to Mary Brandsma at Rock Valley, Ia. To this union two children were born, Jeannete and Richard. Mary died Oet. 22, 1912. On Feb. 23, 1914 he married Jennie Brandsma. To this family five children were born, Willis, Sylvia, Sidney, Elizabeth and Jean. After farming a. few years he disposed of his farming interests, and entered the grocery business at Rock Valley, from there he went to Sanborn in the year 1919, where be since resided. He continued in business until 1940.
He was a faithful member of the Sanborn First Reformed church in which he took an active part, serving 18 years on the Consistory board. He also served on the Town Council eight years.

Survivors, left to mourn his passing are his wife, four sons, Richard, of Arnolds Park, Willis and Sidney of Sanborn, and Jean of Bellflower, Calif., two daughters, Jeannette (Mrs. Jack Pelen), and Sylvia (Mrs. Neal Beyer), both of Sanborn. Also 17 grandchildren. One infant daughter preceded him in death, as also two brothers and two sisters, leaving him last in his immediate family.

Bill Mitchell, Plankinton, S. D.; Mrs. Martha Brandsma, Mr. and Mrs. Milo Brandsma, Flandreau, S. D. Mrs. Florence Jensen, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Langhout, Luverne, MN; Mr. and Mrs. Minnie Krouger, George; Mr. and Mrs. Gabe Brandsma, Breda, Ia.; .Mrs. Sam De Jong, Mr. and Mrs. Sam De Jong Jr., Orange City; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Brandsma, .Canton, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ver Wey, Mrs. Bernice Weiss, Sioux Falls, S. D.
