Hawarden Independent of January 11, 1990

Densel Martin Roberts, 72, of Hawarden, died Friday, January 5, at a Sioux Falls, SD hospital. Services were Monday, January 8, at the American Lutheran Church, in Hawarden, with the Rev. Karla Kirkeby officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery, at Hawarden. Porter-Dow Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Roberts was born October 9, 1917, on a farm near Gravity, the son of George and Bessie (Koneene) Roberts. In 1938, they moved to Omaha, where Densel married Rose Heuer November 22, 1941. He served in the U.S. Army from 1940, going overseas in February 1942. He was taken prisoner on September 13, 1944, and released in April 1945, by troops of the U.S.S.R. He was discharged in August of 1945. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church, of rural Sioux Center on March 31, 1946. The couple farmed northeast of Hawarden from 1946 to 1964, when they retired into Hawarden. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church, the Disabled American Veterans, the Prisoner of War Veterans, and the Hudson (SD) American Legion Post.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Glenna, and her husband Duane Fickbohm, of Hawarden; his mother, of Vancouver, WA; two brothers, Cleo and Berdine "Bob", both of Vancouver; two grandchildren, Kim and her husband Tom Heeren, and Robin and his wife Myong Chu Fickbohm, and one great grandchild, James Fickbohm. He was preceded in death by his father and one granddaughter, Trish Fickbohm.
