DEATH OF CORNELIUS VANDER VELDEN

Cornelius Vander Velden, for over twenty years a resident of Rock Valley, died Friday afternoon [December 4] at the S. Vander Kop home in this city where he had been staying for some time past, after a lingering illness of several months. The deceased was born in the Netherlands Sept. 8, 1832 and had reached at the time of his death the advanced age of 82 years, 2 months and 26 days.

The greater part of his life was spent in his native land. When he was sixty years of age with his family he emigrated to this country, arriving in Rock Valley in 1892 and since that time he has been a resident of this vicinity. His wife preceded him to the great beyond seventeen years ago. He was a man who was highly respected by all who knew him, and although the end had been expected for some time, his death is a great shock to his children and other relatives.

Besides other relatives he leaves to mourn ten children. They are John, Mrs. T. H. Heimen, Mrs. D. Van Eldik, of Rock Valley, Mrs. G. A. Kersbergen of Chandler, Minn., Mrs. De Graas and W. H. Vander Velden, of Netherlands, Henry of Chico, Cal., Joe of Alexandria, S.D., and Cornelius Vander Velden.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Reformed church in Rock Valley conducted by Rev. B DeJonge, pastor of this church. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of many friends.

[The spelling of the surname is probably VanderVelde, the more common form found in the Sioux County Cemetery Index. His wife's obituary (posted separately) spells her surname VandeVelde. Neither Cornelius nor his wife (who is not named in either his or her obit) appears in the Cemetery Index.]
