Hawarden Independent March 9, 1989 *

Marie C. Byker, 94, of Ireton, died Saturday, March 4, 1989, in Hillcrest Care Center, at Hawarden. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, in the Christian Reformed Church in Ireton, with the Rev. Wybren Oord officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery with the Dow Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Eugene Byker, Daryl Byker, Michael Byker. Sylvan Byker, Arlin Byker, Dan Byker and Kevin Byker.

Mrs. Byker, the daughter of Marynus and Hendrikje Hooyer, was born October 15, 1894, at Gelderland, in the Netherlands. She came to the United States with her parents in 1903 and settled in the Oskaloosa area and later moved to Sioux Center. On February 23, 1918, she married Sam Byker in Sioux Center. After their marriage, they moved to a farm near Ireton until 1956, when they retired and moved into Ireton. She was a longtime member of the Christian Reformed Church in Ireton. She was preceded in death by her husband, December 26, 1981 and also a great granddaughter, Kendra Lee Schuiteman.

Survivors include three sons, Gerrit and Marion, both of Hawarden and Gib, of Ireton; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
