Born: January 22, 1880
Died: 1936

William E. White, a resident of this community practically all of his life, died at his home in this city about 7:30 Monday morning following a prolonged illness as the result of a perforated gastric ulcer. He had been experiencing acute attacks of illness over a period of about the past two months that his condition became critical. He was recently taken to a hospital in Sioux City for treatment and a possible operation but after spending a week there without undergoing an operation was brought back home again the day before his death.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 9:30 Wednesday morning with Reverend Father J.M. Neppel in charge and interment was made in the Hawarden Cemetery.

William E. White, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James White, was born in Shullsburg, Wisconsin, January 22, 1880, so was just past 56 years of age. He came here with his parents in April, 1886, and has ever since continued to reside in this community. He attended the public schools here and 36 years ago engaged in the dray and transfer business in Hawarden and continued to follow this occupation almost without interruption until his final illness. On April 2, 1902, he was united in marriage with Miss Mattie Robson. Six children were born to them and all survive. The children are: Mrs. Opal Weiland and Fred; James, Helen and Ruth of Hawarden, and Ted, who resides in Oregon. The latter made a brief trip here a few weeks ago to visit his father. He is also survived by four sisters and one brother, Mrs. E.C. Clark, Rapids City, South Dakota; Mrs. Tim Sullivan, Great Falls, Montana; Mrs. Sylvia Hart, Great Falls, Montana; Robert White, Hawarden, and Mrs. Ben L. Wells, St. Paul, Minnesota.

Mr. White was possessed of a genial nature and many admirable traits of character. He was a man of powerful physical strength and endurance and weather conditions never became too severe for him to be out on the job hauling fuel to householders and performing other tasks in connection with his business. During his lifetime spent in this community he acquired many warm friends who will extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family in their loss.
