Hawarden Independent of August 11, 1988

Hazel E. Gerdes, 83, of Hawarden, died Thursday, August 4, 1988, at a Sioux Falls, SD hospital. Services were held August 7 in the Associated Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Fredrich Mellberg officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Pallbearers were Dan Harris, Dave Gerdes, Dan Gerdes, Dean Harris, Greg Gerdes and Brad Ross. Hazel E. Gerdes.

The daughter of Fred and Pearl Williamson Jackson, was born at Ute on August 22, 1904 and died at Sioux Falls, SD, on August 4, 1988, at the age of 83 years, 1 1 months and 12 days. Mrs. Gerdes graduated from the Dennison High School in 1923 and from, the Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls in 1928. After graduating, she taught school in Crawford County and at Denver. She was united in marriage to Ben G. Gerdes on March 18, 1927, at Waterloo. After her marriage she lived in Fairfax, SD, Alvord and spent three years in Memphis, TN before moving to Hawarden November 7, 1940. She was a member of the Associated Church, the Eastern Star and an activemember of the Hawarden Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband on January 30, 1980. Survivors include one son, Dr. Gary Gerdes, of Omaha, NE; two daughters, Mrs. William (Dr. Kathryn) Harris, of Bedford and Mrs. LeRoy (Linde) Ross, of Hawarden; one sister, Izetta Burton, of Huntsville, MO; ten grandchildren, Valerie, Dennis, Dan and Dean Harris, Dave, Greg and Dan Gerdes, Brad, Julie and JoLynn Ross; and nine greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
