Helen Ball, 90, of-Hawarden, died Friday, August 13, 1988, at a hospital in Hawarden following a long illness. Services were 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 16, 1988 at the Associated Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Fredrich Mellberg officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Jerry Wood, Densel Robert Glenn Olsen, Elwood Bolster, James Scott and Bud Swartzbaugh.

Mrs. Ball, the former Helen Wells, was born November 2, 1897, at Greencastle, IN. She graduated from high school in Lincoln, NE. She received her bachelor's degree from the Nebraska Wesleyan University at Lincoln in 1919. She taught history and French at Wahoo and York, NE before moving to Hawarden in 1922. She married Lloyd R. Ball September 22, 1925, in Lincoln. She continued to teach at Hawarden from 1922 until 1925 and again from 1954 until 1963.

She served as president of the Hawarden school board from 1934 until 1940. She was past president of Chapter EM PEO and the Hawarden Woman's Club, the. Legion Auxiliary, the Associated Church, the International Platform Association, the U.S. Congressional Advisory Board and the Capital Hill Club of Washington, D.C.

Survivors include three nieces, Mary Ann Osgood of Morro Bay, CA, Sally M. Kroll of Denver, CO; Judy T. Stiefel of Denton, NE; two nephews, Tad M. Tucker of St. Louis, MO and John G. Tucker of Omaha, NE; a brother-in-law John H. Tucker of Lincoln, NE.
