Betty White is Drowning Victim

Miss Betty Lou White, daughter of Robert John White of Hawarden, Iowa, drowned on Tuesday, July 25, 1944, while swimming at Vancouver, Washington, where she had been employed for several months.

Her body was not recovered until Wednesday, July 26, 1944, forenoon. The remains were shipped to Hawarden, Iowa, arriving early on Monday (July 31, 1944) morning.

Funeral services were held at the Barnard Funeral Home at 2 o'clock, Tuesday, August 1, 1944, afternoon with Reverend W.V. Bell of the Methodist Church in charge. Interment was in Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden, Iowa.

Betty Lou White was born in Hawarden Iowa, to Robert and Jennie (McDonald) White on December 13, 1925. She would have been 19 on her next birthday. She attended the Hawarden public schools until her junior year in high school. Her mother passed away in September of 1934, and for six years following her death she lived in the Mrs. W. H. Johnson home. She took a nurse's aid course at Wayne, Nebraska, but later took a course in welding in Sioux City, Iowa. Some time ago she went to Vancouver, Washington, where she was employed as a welder.

She is survived by her father; three brothers; Elmer "Bud" White, Sgt. Robert J. White, stationed in the South Pacific war area, and John "Jack" White; four sisters, Bernice; Mary; Margaret; and half sister Marilyn. (Later another half sister was born, Virginia.
