Hawarden Independent November 5, 1987

Mavis Smith, 48, of Hawarden, died Friday, October 30, 1987, in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness. Services were at 1:30 p.m., Monday, November 2, at the Associated Church in Hawarden. Rev. Fredrich Mellberg officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery (Union County, SD) west of Hawarden, under direction of Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden. Pallbearers were Andy Smith, David Johnson, Charles Gregg, Benton Boyer, Kenneth Carlson and Dike Scroggs.

Mrs. Smith, the former Mavis Ann Yens, was born on April 16, 1939, in La Crosse, Wl. She moved with her parents to Miller, SD, and attended school there. She graduated from South Dakota State University in 1961. She taught home economics in Garretson, SD, for two years. She married Calvin Smith June 30, 1963, in Miller. The couple lived on a farm near Hawarden.

She was a member of the Associated Church and served as an elder. She served as Sunday School superintendent for many years and was a member of the Mutual Improvement Club and past president of PEO. She was also a member of Extension Club and leader of the Peppy Pals 4-H Club.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Susan, and a son, David Lewis, both at home; and her mother, Marguerite Yens of Miller.
