Hawarden Independent December 10, 1987

Vesta Tilgner, 85, of Hawarden, died Tuesday, December 1, 1987, in a nursing home in Hawarden.
Services were 2 p.m. Thursday, December 3, in the First Baptist Church, in Hawarden, with the Rev. Harley Betzolt officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Tilgner, the former Vesta Cooper, was born July 9, 1902, in Hawarden and graduated from
Hawarden High School in 1919. She married John E. Tilgner June 6, 1923, at Iowa City. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1926 and taught school for three years in Hawarden. From 1940 until 1975 she assisted her husband in operating the Ben Franklin Store, in Hawarden. In 1983, she moved to Hillcrest Care Center, in Hawarden. He died Feb. 5,1984.

During World War II, she was the home service chairman for the Red Cross, in Hawarden, a position she held until 1965. She was a past president and 35-year board member of the Hawarden library; a member of First Baptist Church and past organist and Sunday school teacher;60-year member of Order of Eastern Star and 50-year member of PEO.

Survivors include two sons, John Jr. of Chicago and Tom, of Hawarden; a sister, Mrs. Elden (Betty) Berge of Hawarden; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
