Funeral services for James McCarthy, 51, of Chicago, former Hawarden resident and nephew of John McCarthy of Hawarden, will be held at 9:30 this morning (Thursday) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Reverend Father Leander Friedman will officiate with interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The body arrived at the Barnard Funeral Home Wednesday. He died Sunday at a Veteran Hospital in Chicago.

Born in Hawarden, July 11, 1919, a son of Tom and Mary McCarthy, he attended school here and graduated from Hawarden High School in 1933.

He was employed by the Sioux City Journal as supervisor of paper carriers in 50 towns for six years.

Entering World War II on April 21, 1943, he served in Japan, the Philippines and Guadalcanal.

Survivors include his father, Tom McCarthy; two sisters, Agnes McCarthy and Mrs. John McCormick, all of Chicago; a brother, Raymond, of Merced, California and nine nieces and nephews.
