Death: July, 1957Funeral services for Roy Nelson, 60, a longtime community leader here who died Friday at the hospital here after a long illness, were held Monday morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Requiem High Mass was said at 9 o'clock with Father Leander Friedman was celebrant. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home.
Mr. Nelson was a member of the Hawarden city council 16 years and served as a member of the Hawarden volunteer fire department over 30 years. He was born near Hudson, South Dakota, August 8, 1896, and farmed with his father near here for number of years. For the past 35 years he was an agent for the Standard Oil Company.
He married Lucille Nolan November 25, 1922, in Hawarden where the couple took up residence and remained in the same home until his death.
Survivors include the widow; the mother, Mrs. Anna (Twedt) Nelson of Hawarden; one son, Don of Charles City, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Harold M. Smith of Hawarden and Mrs. Raymond Younie of Gann Valley, South Dakota, and four grandchildren.
Besides Mr. and Mrs. Don Nelson and son, Kirk, and Mrs. Raymond Younie, those from out of town attending the funeral were Mrs. Luella Brochet, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Twedt, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Twedt and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Twedt, all from the Hudson vicinity, Iver Twedt and Mr. and Mrs. Alford Twedt of Canton, Mrs. Nels Westergard of Sioux Falls and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Holmdal of Alcester.
Co-workers in the Standard Oil Company who came for the services were L.B. Kelly and O.N. Fitts of Mason City, Jack Marshall of Hudson, Kay Praulie of Doon, Charles Sides of LeMars, J.H. Hoel, Fred Hazy, Harry Workhoven, J.R. Sullivan and William Tawney, all of Sioux City, Jay McVay of Akron, Andy Mars of Ireton, Lowell Klemme of Merrill, Al Van Oort of Rock Valley, James Hauser of Struble, Mick Wood of Paullina.
Mrs. R.H. Nolan and two daughters, Margaret and Helen of Cherokee, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Feyder of Humboldt, South Dakota, and Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Richards and family of Anthon, Iowa, were unable to attend the funeral but were here Sunday.
