Hawarden Independent, June 4, 1964

Funeral services for Leonard M. Scriven, 76, former city councilman and retired Hawarden business man who died Monday at the hospital here following a long illness, will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon (Thursday) at the Associated Church. Rev. William Sebring will officiate.

Interment will be in Grace Hill cemetery under the direction of the Barnard Funeral home. Two Oakes Post American Legion will conduct graveside rites.

Mrs. Ralph Gregg, Jr., will be the soloist with Mrs. Hal Shoemaker as organist. Casket bearers will be Harry Swift, Lee Keehn, Harry Hodoway, Louis Wegner, Bob Koob and Harley Whittington.

Mr. Scriven was born April 12, 1888, at Spencer, Iowa. He operated a hardware store in Sioux Falls before moving here in 1917. He served in France during World War I and was a file clerk on the Peace Commission in Paris.

He married Serena Sundling in 1919 at Hawarden. He owned and operated a grocery store here from 1919 until retiring in 1962.

Mr. Scriven was a member of the city council 14 years, a charter member of Two Oakes post, American Legion; belonged to the Last Men's club, was a charter member of the 40 & 8 club, a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; a 50 year member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and was a member of the Congregational church.

Mrs. Scriven died in 1960 at Hawarden.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Frances Swan of New York City; two sisters, Mrs. Madge O'Donnell of San Francisco and Mrs. T. A. Flatten of Alameda, Calif, and a grandson.
