Robert John Wendel, 72, of Hawarden died Tuesday, April 26, 1999, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden, with the Reverend Loren Vogler officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Mr. Wendel was born July 22, 1926, in Union County in South Dakota, near Hawarden, the son of John and Hulda (Reiser) Wendel. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended Williams Country School in Union County. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean War.

He married Dorothy Ludwig of Alcester, South Dakota. She died May 1963. He married Marian Pasewalk on September 3, 1964, in Pipestone, Minnesota. The couple farmed in Union County until his retirement in 1982. They then moved into Hawarden. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he held various church offices, and Hawarden American Legion. He enjoyed reading and traveling.

Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Arlene Brandes of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Helen Hartmaan of Cozad, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews.
