John was born August 2, 1877, at Fahmen Island, Germany, to Jurgen and Katherine (Olsen) Wendel. His birth name was Johannes Matthaus Wendel. When John was fifteen years old, he came to America, where he settled at Gladbrook, Iowa. He moved from Gladbrook to Hawarden, Iowa before eventually moving to Minnesota. John married Anna Jacobs of Hawarden January 30, 1912. In 1920, he moved to Montrose, South Dakota, where he spent the rest of his life. John died at home in Montrose as a result of a heart attack.

Funeral services were held at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Madison, South Dakota. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden.

Relatives from Hawarden who attended the services at Madison were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hass, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hass, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hass, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hass, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Wendel, and Dewey Jacobs. Other relatives were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wendel of Hudson, Mrs. Ida Wendel and Emil and Joan of Moville, Iowa.

Besides the widow he is survived by four children, Nick, Walter and Fern Wendel of Montrose and Clara Wendel of Hawarden; one sister, Mrs. Jim Hass and one brother, Nick Wendel, both of Hawarden, and two grandchildren.
