Services for Lester L. Benson, 86, of Canby were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian church in Canby. Burial was in the Canby cemetery.

Mr. Benson died Sunday at the Senior Haven Nursing Home in Canby. He was born Dec 18, 1897 in Ireton, Iowa, to Julius and Alta Benson. He grew up on a farm near Rock Valley, Iowa and attended the Sioux Falls Business college. On Oct 15, 1918, He and Esther Griffin were married in Rock Valley. The couple moved to a farm near Canby in 1919, where the two continued farming until their retirement.

Mr. Benson was active in the Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder. He was the Oshkosh Township clerk for 30 years, a member of the rural School district No. 39 School Board, on the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation committee, president of the Yellow Medicine County Farm Bureau, the livestock supervisor of the Yellow Medicine County Fair, president of the Yellow Medicine 4-H Council and a member of the Senior Haven Canby community Hospital board. He was also a member of the Canby Chamber of Commerce, the Canby Rotary Club and the Canby Promotional Corporation.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dale of Alexandria, Lyle of Eugene, OR and Verle of Canby; a daughter, Mrs. Wayne Donna Monke of Canby; ten grandchildren eight great grandchildren; Three brothers, Glenn of Rock Valley, Elmer of Santa Ana, Calif, and Lloyd of Valley Center, CA., and a sister Carrie of Inglewood CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and a granddaughter.
