Sioux County Capital May 31, 1990

Gertrude Loewen Mrs. Gertrude J. Loewen, age 70, of Alton, died Thursday, May 24 at the Orange City Municipal Hospital. Gertrude J. was born Nov. 25, 1919 at Alton, the daughter of Henry Van Asselt and Tillie Van Zandbergen Van Asselt. She graduated from the Alton High School.

On Sept. 2, 1939 she married Ernest Nicholas Loewen at Alton. They continued to live in Alton. In addition to being wife and mother in her own home, she served as housekeeper to several Alton families for many years. Mrs. Loewen was a member of the Alton Presbyterian Church where she belonged to United Presbyterian Women and the Rebecca Circle.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Marvin and his wife Sally of Blue Point, N.Y.; and Alan and his wife Cindy of Salt Lake City, Utah; a daughter Janice of Sioux City; three grandsons, Christopher, Jonathan and Eric; and two brothers, Franklin Van Asselt of parker, S.D. and Henry Van Asselt of California. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Francis Van Asselt and two sisters, Anna Huisman, and Frances in infancy.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 29 in the Alton Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Rick Kargard and Robert Vander Schaaf officiating. Interment followed at Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman- Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.
Memorials are being directed to the Alton Presbyterian Church.
