Hawarden Independent, March 31, 1966

Funeral services for Mrs. Susan Theis, 92, longtime Hawarden resident who died Friday after having been bedridden at the home of her daughter several months, were held at 10 a.m., Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fr. William Carel officiating at the requiem high mass. Interment was at St. Mary's cemetery under the direction of the Barnard-Dow Funeral Home.

Casket bearers were: Robert Hodoway; Joe Koob, Bernard Koob; Ervin Madson; Ronald Madsen and Lloyd Keehn.

The rosary was recited at the funeral home Sunday evening.

Susan Koob was born on February 16, 1874, in Luxemburg. She married John Theis there April 4, 1894, and the same year came to the United States.

They first settled in Le Mars, later moving to Currie, Minn. They came to Hawarden about 1906, 60 years ago. He died July 11, 1950.

Mrs. Theis was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and St. Mary's Guild. She lived alone and retained wonderful eyesight and mental alertness, doing a great deal of fancy work through her 91st birthday.

During her younger years she was an assistant to Dr. Meyers, a medical doctor in Hawarden.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Harry (Margaret) Hodoway of Hawarden; a son, John, in Elkland, MO; 9 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
