Memorial services for Evelyn Hemmingson Herrick, 49, were held March 30, at Ft. Myers chapel in Washington, D.C., with interment in Arlington cemetery. Mrs. Herrick died March 23 at High Wycombe, England.

Mrs. Herrick, who had served in the Coast Guard and the Reserve for 26 years, being promoted to lieutenant commander in January, was buried with full military rites. The flag-draped casket was carried on a caisson drawn by six black horses. The honor guard on the march to the cemetery was composed of 12 Coast Guard women and 20 Navy servicemen. A single drum cadence was played on the march and enroute to the cemetery the Navy Band played "Onward Christian Soldiers". Also included in the military rites were a 21 gun salute and the sounding of taps.

Mrs. Herrick was born March 8, 1918 at Buffalo Springs, N.D., a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Einer Hemmingson. She earned her bachelor's degree at Barnard College and in 1960 received a law degree from Columbia University. During World War II and the Korean War she served on active duty with the Coast Guard.

In 1961 and 1962 she was associated with a New York firm and served as executive assistant to Ambassador Thomas Finletter at NATO headquarters in Paris. From 1962 to 1964 she was associated with a Washington attorney. Later she was with firms in Rhode Island and in England. She was the only American woman to be admitted to the Women's Press Club of London, Ltd.

Survivors include the widower, Capt. H. Scott Herrick, USN; her mother, Mrs. John Hodgson of Hawarden; three brothers, Gerald Hemmingson of Alexandria, VA; Kenneth Hemmingson of Olympia, KY, and Joe Hemmingson of Herron, MI, and three sisters, Mrs. Allen Baker of Salisbury, MD; Mrs. Rosa Weaver of Pomona, CA, and Mrs. Steve Hodges of Phenix City, Alabama.

Mrs. John Hodgson returned Monday night after attending the funeral services for her daughter.
