The death of Robert Rose Monday morning of heart trouble came as a sudden shock to the family, friends and neighbors of the deceased. He was a victim of the asthma and this is thought to have hastened the end. Early Monday morning he was feeling better than usual and went to visit his daughter a few doors away. Here he was taken sick and in ten minutes he was dead.

Robert Rose was born at Norwich, England, Feb. 13, 1823. He married Miss Eliza Goddard Sept. 26, 1847 and in two years they would have celebrated their golden wedding. Ten children were born to them, of whom but three are living, Charles B. Rose of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Geo. Niehaus and Harry Rose both of this city. The deceased came to American thirty one years ago and first settled at Cold Springs, N.Y. He removed later to Iowa and came to Hawarden eleven years ago. By trade he was an iron molder. In 1888 he secured a patent on the Rose furnace grate. For the lack of funds he struggled along for years, trying to introduce his patent. Finally a company of home capitalism organized to manufacture the patent and the Rose furnace grate is coming to be best known not only in United States but in England. The royalty paid on this valuable patent smoothed the rough places in his declining years, and leaves the sorrowing companion in comfortable circumstances.

At his death he was 72 years, three months and three days old. He had been a member of the Masonic order for twenty-eight years and the interment took place Wed. afternoon with the honors of that order. Brother Masons from the surrounding towns attended in body and Brother F. A. Morrow conducted the services. It was the first funeral in Hawarden conducted by this order and the floral offerings by the Hawarden Lodge were elaborate and beautiful. The grass may hide and the rain may efface the grave of Robert Rose but the memory of him who was faithful in business relations, honest and kind, will long remain fresh in the memory of all who knew him.
