Hawarden Independent, March 20, 1930

Alma Sophia Erickson was born Sept. 7, 1879 in Big Springs on the farm known as the Lindblom place, and passed away March 11, 1930, after being an invalid for several years with most of the last six years spent in bed. She was 50 years, 6 months and 4 days old, at the time of her death. She lived in this community with her parents until Aug. 15, 1896, when she was united in marriage to Charles Malstrom. They moved to their present location in 1902 and this was her home until her death. She was baptized and united with the Big Springs Baptist church during the pastorate of Rev. Silene. Her health had never been robust and six years ago she became bedridden, a young mother with a large family to care for, but in spite of ill health she was still the mother around whom everything seemed to center. Her daughters gave her loving and tender care and she used to often say, "O, they are so good to me". The reward promised to children who love and honor their parents will surely be theirs in a rich measure. She is survived by her husband and nine children, Nellie, Nina, Doris and Daphne at home, Mrs. Emil Fredell of Akron and Mrs. Gunnard Carlson of Big Springs; and three sons, Melvin of Bowman, N.D.; and Raymond and Orville at home. She also leaves her aged mother, Mrs. Peter Erickson; four brothers, Eddie, Arthur and Verner of Big Springs and Rudolph of Hurley, SD, and two sisters, Hannah of Big Springs and Victoria of Long Beach, CA and five little grandchildren. Her father preceded her in death 26 years. A devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend has only gone on awhile before there to await the coming of her loved ones. Her faith in God was sure and steadfast and during her long illness she often spoke of the heavenly home awaiting her. May God bless her memory and comfort her sorrowing family.

Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon, first at the home and then in the Big Springs church with Rev. B. L. Carlton in charge. Her remains were laid to rest beside loved ones in the Big Springs cemetery.
