Died: January 22, 1938

Chas. Yates, reared in Center township and resident of Sanborn, Iowa, for 24 years, died at his home last Saturday evening, January 22, from a heart attack with which he was stricken a few hours before. Mr. Yates had enjoyed fair health and was about his usual duties. He had remarked that morning he had not felt so well in two years. A short time later he complained of pain in the region of his heart and went to bed late Saturday evening.

Chas. Yates was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Yates and was reared in the old Yates homestead in Center township. Had he lived until March 9 he would have been 65 years of age. On March 9, 1899, he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Wiebert at Ireton and they enjoyed 39 years of wedding life together and would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary next March.

He is survived by his widow and the following children: Thomas of Fairfax, South Dakota, Mrs. Pearl Strait of LaPlatte, Missouri, Mrs. Mary Applegate of Kansas City, Missouri, Mrs. Florence Ball of Ireton, Mrs. Bernice Ball and Mrs. Lowell Jans of Hawarden, Fred Yates, Mrs. Hilda Statema, Mrs. Lila Crawford, Mrs. Mildred Frohwein all living in the vicinity of Sanborn, Milton, Grace, and Lawrence at home. There are 22 grandchildren, one brother, Jim Yates of Ireton, two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Hansaker of Burke, South Dakota, and Mrs. Elizabeth Schutt of Denver, Colorado.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the M.E. Church at Sanborn and the remains were brought to Ireton where they were interred in the family plot in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. All the children were present except Mrs. Pearl Strait who was held up east of Des Moines because of the icy conditions of the roads and did not get here until early Wednesday.

Mr. Yates was a man who was devoted to his family, a splendid neighbor and was respected by all who knew him.
