Business Man In Hawarden For 42 Years
Word was received in Hawarden Wednesday of the death of W. H. Wilkinson, 83, former Hawarden
business man, who died Monday following a lingering illness. Mr. Wilkinson submitted to an operation more than two years ago and since then had been in poor health. Funeral services are being held from Mottell chapel in Long Beach this afternoon. Burial will be in Long Beach.

Mr. Wilkinson was in the hardware business in Hawarden 42 years. He retired in January, 1944
when he sold his business to the late Don C. McCown. Shortly after he sold his residence here and in May of that year he and his wife moved to California so that they might he near their son.

William Wilkinson was born in February of 1867 at Eagle, Wis., where he grew to manhood. In 1888
he came west, locating at Hull, then known as Pattersonville. When he moved to Hull he was employed as a tinner by a former resident of his home town. Later he purchased this hardware business. On July 20, 1892 he married Miss Allie Yockey in the home of her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Grisell, at Hull. In 1901 he came to Hawarden.

Both Mr, and Mrs. Wilkinson took an active part in social and civic affairs of Hawarden in the
early days. At one time he served as mayor, completing an unexpired term, and he was also a member of the city council. He was one of the promoters of the Knights of Pythias here in the earlier days and held an office in this lodge. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge. He was a member of the Congregational church and a number of years he served on the board of control of the Associated church.

He is survived by his widow and one son, Zeno, of Long Beach, and two grandchildren, Jane of Long
Beach and Charles Zeno, who is in the service.
