James S. Yates, 69, a prominent farmer residing four and half miles east of Hawarden, passed away at his home at 10 o’clock Tuesday evening following a heart attack. Mr. Yates had not been well for some time and had suffered from a heart attacks at various times.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church in Hawarden at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, with Reverend W.V. Bell in charge. Interment will be in Grace Hill Cemetery.

James Yates was born in Tama County, Iowa, December 13, 1876, where he spent his early days. When he came to Sioux County, he first lived on a farm north of Ireton for a number of years. He was united in marriage with Anne Taylor on November 18, 1897, after which he lived on a farm northwest of Ireton. In 1909, he brought a farm east of Hawarden and since then he lived in this vicinity. He built a smaller house across the road from the old farm home 18 years ago and he and his wife have occupied it, but he did not retire from farming until this year.

He is survived by his wife and two sons, Merle Yates and Jesse Yates, who reside east of Hawarden and one sister, Mrs. Sadie Hunsacker of Blunt, South Dakota. There are seven grandchildren. One grandson, Lloyd Yates was recently discharged from the service and is coming home from San Diego, California. Another grandson, Lyle Yates, has just completed his boot training at the Great Lakes. Both of these grandsons expect to be here for the funeral

Mr. and Mrs. Merle Yates and family were visiting in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, when his father died, but they arrived home Wednesday night.
