Roghair, Dr. Garry 1937-2008

Dr. Garry Roghair died on June 17, at the age of 71 at his home in Redlands, CA, after a year long battle with cancer.

On Sat. June 28 a service to celebrate Dr. Roghair's life was held at First Congregational Church in Redlands.

A private family graveside service was held at Hillside Memorial Park.

He was born on April 27, 1937 in Orange City to Garrit and Tillie Roghair.

He graduated from Orange City High School in 1955.

In 1959 he graduated from the University of Iowa where he was Phi Beta Kappa, with a degree in Psychology. He earned his medical degree in 1964 from the University of Iowa School of Medicine. Dr. Roghair completed a year internship at the Cottage Hospital, in Santa Barbara, CA., then was commissioned as a captain in the Army Medical Corps at Fort Meyer, VA.

After two years in the Army, he completed his residency training in radiology through Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.

In 1970 he moved his family to Redlands and was chief of radiology for San Bernadino County Hospital. In 1975 he joined Arlington Radiology Medical Group in Riverside, CA, which later became Renaissance Radiology. He continued to work into the last year of his life.

He loved teaching and won many awards from Riverside County and from Loma Linda University School of Medicine, where he was an assistant professor of Clinical radiology. Dr. Roghair received Riverside County Regional Medical Centers highest honor, the Bertrand H. Eckmann, M.D. Visionary Leadership Award, in recognition of his medical skills, teaching and dedication.

He was involved in and supported programs for youth, including coaching Baseball for Youth and Redlands Youth Basketball. He was also advancement chairperson for his son's Boy Scout troops making sure his sons and others truly earned their Eagle Scout awards. Dr. Roghair valued education sharing his knowledge of medicine and radiology with his grandchildren's classes and attending their award ceremonies.

Dr. Roghair was a deacon and member of the Church Council of the First Congregational Church of Redlands. He taught an adult Sunday School class and visited shut-in church members.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Carol (Melles) Roghair, daughter Kathy and Ken Hedlund, son Steven and Danielle Roghair, daughter Kyra Borkgren, son Chad and Kathleen Roghair, daughter Karen and Mark Taylor, sister Linda (Roghair) and Jim Corelli and 12 grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Garrit and Tillie Roghair and his father and mother-in-law John and Pearl Melles.
