PASSED AWAY LAST FRRIDAY AT THE AGE OF 69 YEARS--WAS A RESIDENT OF HAWARDEN FOR MANY YEARS--SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE AND FIVE CHILDREN

James Robert Woodward, a pioneer resident of Hawarden, died in the hospital at Cherokee last Friday evening, December 31st, where he had been taken only a few days before on account of the seriousness of his condition. The body was brought to Hawarden Saturday afternoon and the funeral was held Monday afternoon from the Baptist Church, Reverend Joel E. Bruner conducting the services. Interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

James Woodward was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, October 17, 1858, so was a little past 69 years of age. On December 4, 1886, he was united in marriage with Miss Laura Jackson and a few years later they came to Hawarden and with the exception of a few years when they resided at Jewell, Iowa, have made their home here ever since. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Woodward, all of whom, with the widow, survive. The children are Mrs. Hugh Page, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, Mrs. Chas. Fleming of Custer, South Dakota, Mrs. Clarence Best of Sioux City, Mrs. Victor Templar and Paul Woodward of Hawarden. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. All of the children except Mrs. Fleming were here to attend the funeral.

During the thirty-five years or more that Mr. Woodward lived in Hawarden he won many lasting friends. Always a hard worker, he was honest and upright and was held in the highest esteem in the community. He had been in failing health for about five years with hardening of the arteries during which time he was not able to work regularly but through it all he maintained an attitude of cheerfulness until the final few months of his illness.

He was a member of the Baptist Church and the Woodmen of the World Lodge.

He leaves many sorrowing friends who extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of the family.
