Hawarden Independent July 18, 1996

Irene Bennett, 79, of Hawarden died Saturday, July 13, 1996, at the Hawarden Community Hospital. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden with the Rev. Dean Shelly officiating. Burial was at Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden.

Mrs. Bennett was born Nov. 18, 1916, at Ireton, the daughter of William and Christina (Schmidhans) Van Wyhe. She graduated from the Akron High School in 1934 and received her teaching certificate from Westmar College. She taught in rural schools near Ireton. On June 18, 1940, she married Clarence "Bud" Bennett at Ponca, Neb. The couple farmed in the Hawarden vicinity, moving into Hawarden in 1985. Mrs. Bennett was a member of the Hawarden United Methodist Church and was active in a local card club. She had volunteered. at the Hass Hillcrest Center for 15 years.

Survivors include her husband; a son Thomas Leslie and his wife, Gayle of Manhatten, Kan.; a daughter, Rolleen Kay Hofland of Hawarden; a sister, Bernice Janssen and her husband, Lorenz of Hawarden; five grandchildren, Sara Jo Bennett, Leslie Ann Stahl, Mark Allen Hofland, and Bradley Joe and Kristi Jo Hofland, and three great-grandsons. Memorials may be made in her name to the Hawarden United Methodist Church.
