Gertie A. Van Beek was born on a farm in Sioux County, IA, the daughter of Lammert and Dena (Bruins) Vande Berg. She was raised and educated in Sioux County,IA. On Dec. 24, 1912 she married Andrew Van Beek at Sioux Center, IA. and they made their home on a farm west of Westfield, N.D. until 1944 when they moved into Westfield. Her husband died in Nov. of 1968 and in 1982 Gertie entered the Strasburg Nursing Home where she died this past Sunday. She was organist for the Hope Reformed Church for over 60 year. Gertie gave piano lessons until her 85th birthday. She was a member of the Hope Reformed Church and Ladies Aid and Treasurer for many years. She was the Westfield Correspondent for the Emmons County Record and the Pollock Pioneer Newspapers for many years.
Grateful to have shared her life are two sons; Lester Van Beek of Strasburg, N.D. and Rev. Raymond Van Beek of Garden Grove, CA.; one daughter; Mrs. Dorothy Looyenga of Pollock, S.D. 17 Grandchildren; 44 Great-Grandchildren and 28 Great-Great-Grandchildren and one sister, Jennie Dykshorn of Sioux Center, IA. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, John in 1978, two grandsons,( Lyle Van Beek in 1964 and Darrell Van Beek in 1969), one Great Great Grandson (Lester Jake Van Beek in 1968) five brothers and one sister.
