Austin D. Jones, a prominent early day resident of Calliope and Hawarden, died at Monrovia, CA. Sunday according to word received here Monday morning. Mr. Jones went to California for his health several months ago and had been seriously ill since Christmas. Death was caused by complications of diseases. The remains are being brought back for burial.
Mr. Jones was born at Madison, Wis. February 20, 1859, so had passed his 64th year. In 1867 the family moved to Iowa and he later came to Sioux County and located at Calliope where he engaged in the real estate business. Some time after the town of Hawarden was started he moved down from the north side and continued his real estate business here until 1895 when he moved with his family to Sioux City which place continued to be his home until his removal to California a year ago. On February 16, 1881 he was united in marriage with Margaret Burke who passed away November 22, 1911.
He is survived by four children, Mrs. Frank Elliott of Bronson, Iowa; Mrs. Fred Weber and Mrs. A. T. Bailey of Sioux City; and Austin Jones Jr. of Chicago. Besides the children he is survived by his second wife, whom he married March 11, 1920, and who was with him at the time of his death.. He also leaves two half sisters and one half brother, Mrs. A. R. Scott of Hawarden, Mrs. A. V. Elliot of Beresford, S.D. and Chas. Carpenter of Sioux City.
Austin Jones took a prominent part in the early development of this community and was widely known to be of the early residents here. He was of forceful character and made lasting friendships. He continued in the real estate business in Sioux City after leaving here and later became immigration agent for the Milwaukee Railway Company, spending the last of his active years in this work. His demise is deeply regretted by his host of long-time friends.
