Obituary for Peter Bos

Mr. Peter Bos, age 91, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2015, at the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, February 18, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Peter was born on October 7, 1923, at Maurice, the son of Henry and Gertrude (Bakker) Bos. He was raised in the Struble and Remsen areas and attended the country school which is now on the Plymouth County Fair Grounds in Le Mars.

On January 28, 1948, he married Esther Van Gorp at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. They first made their home on a farm near Remsen. Later, they moved to a farm near Maurice, where they spent most of their married life. In 1979, they retired into Orange City. He moved to Happy Siesta on January 30, 2015.

“Pete” was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he served as an elder on the consistory and taught catechism classes.

He sang with the Fellowship Singers for more than 25 years. He knew the words of the songs by memory and also belonged to a harmonica group. They played for the residents of area nursing homes and also for patients at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he had many appointments.

In earlier years, before an accident took his eyesight, he enjoyed outdoor activities, such as fishing and hunting. He still liked woodworking.

Survivors include his wife of more than 67 years; a son and his wife, Paul and Karen Bos, of Maurice; a daughter and her husband, Gaylene and Cornelius Eshuis, of Orange City; a daughter-in-law and her husband, Joann and James Coy, of Sioux City; six grandchildren Susan Sitzman, of Sioux City; Jesse (Courtney) Bos, of Rochester; Dean (Jean) Bos and Bruce (Amy) Bos, all of Maurice; Emily (Scott) Winters, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Heidi (Brian) Poppens, of Lennox, South Dakota; five step-grandchildren, Darren (Colleen) Eshuis, of Polk City; Jarret Eshuis, of Brandon, South Dakota; Mickie (Ken) Bride, of Sioux City; Tami (Bill) Hummel, of Westfield; and Jason Coy, of Sioux City; 22 great-grandchildren; a sister, Gertrude Vande Brake, of Denver, Colorado; Esther’s three brothers, Russell Van Gorp, of Orange City; Donald (Alvina) Van Gorp, of Montevideo, Minnesota; and Perry (Jo) Van Gorp, of Sioux Center; and a special foreign student living with them, Sun Mudiavita, from Africa.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Dennis Bos and Daniel Bos, who both passed away in their early twenties; a great-granddaughter, Audrey Sitzman; two brothers, William Bos and Henry Bos, Jr.; five sisters, Nellie Koldenhoven, Alice Koldenhoven, Christine Koldenhoven, Wilhelmina Hartog, and Winnie Mulder; Esther’s parents, Edward and Gertrude Van Gorp; two of her brothers, Howard Van Gorp and Lloyd Van Gorp; and a special uncle, Sam Bakker.
