Obituary for David M. Kuiken

Mr. David Kuiken, age 95, of Maurice, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2015, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, February 23, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. The Revs. Gary Hegstad and Donald De Kok will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

David Maynard was born on August 14, 1919, at Maurice, the son of Frank and Mary (Langarack) Kuiken. He was raised on farms near Maurice and Sioux Center, where he attended country schools. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in France and Germany, driving an ambulance for injured soldiers and later the general’s jeep.

On February 20, 1947, he married Edith Laurene Huisman at her parents’ home in Rock Valley. They farmed between Maurice and Orange City for most of their married life. In later years, they moved into Maurice and in May of 2011, they became residents of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. In April of 2014, he transferred to the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

“Dave” was a member of the Maurice Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as an elder and a deacon. He was one of the chairmen of the building committee for the new church in the early 1980s.

He thoroughly enjoyed farming, but also liked fishing, playing cards, and playing pool. He looked forward to wintering in Texas for thirty years.

Survivors include his wife of one day short of 68 years; three children, Arlin Kuiken, of Alton; Karen, and her husband, Henry Leusink, of Orange City; and Leon Kuiken, and his wife, Terri, of Maurice; a daughter-in-law, Jolene Kuiken, of Orange City; six grandchildren, Julie, and her husband, Steve Vis; Kristi Kuiken; Brent Kuiken, and his wife, Michelle; Mike Leusink; Steve Leusink, and his wife, Amber; and Greg Leusink, and his wife, Jennifer; twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother, Goldie Colenbrander, of Sioux Center; Orville Kuiken, and his wife, Harriet, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Wilma Ruisch, of Orange City; two sisters-in-law, Wanda Kuiken, of Maurice; and Ruth Kuiken, of Ceres, California; and Edith’s three sisters, Janet, and her husband, Don De Groot, of Hull; Harriet Kleinhesselink, of Orange City; and Wilma, and her husband, Stan De Boom, of Sioux Center; two sisters-in-law, Gert Huisman, of Rock Valley and Greta Huisman, of Orange City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Dykshorn; two brothers, Stanley and Wilson Kuiken; and three brothers-in-law, Ed Dykshorn, Arie Colenbrander, and Howard Ruisch.

Memorials will be directed to the Hope Haven Wheelchair Ministry in Orange City.
