Obituary for Margaret G. Hackett

Margaret Hackett, age 86, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2015, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, February 16, at 1:30pm, at the Alton Reformed Church in Alton. The Rev. Scott Bonestroo and Chaplin Mary Block will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hospers Cemetery. Visitation and lunch with the family will be the hour before the service on Monday at the church.

Margaret was born on December 29, 1928, in Orange City, the daughter of Sam and Lucy (De Jager) Ennema. She grew up in the communities of Orange City and Sheldon. She was the oldest of seven children. Her siblings are Katherine Vander Plaats, Gertrude “Trudy” Woudstra, Marty Ennema, and Dorothy Zeucher, all currently living in Sheldon. Her sister, Berdella Brown, resides in George. Her youngest brother, Larry, preceded her in death.

On June 5, 1946, Margaret married Andrew J. Oordt in Orange City. They lived in Hospers and Sheldon before moving to Orange City. They enjoyed going to sporting events, remodeling and selling homes, traveling with friends, and spending time at Lake Okoboji. Andrew passed away on January 14, 1978, in Orange City.

On December 8, 1979, Margaret married Russell Vande Brake in Alton. They made their home at 503 2nd Street NE in Orange City. Russell passed away on June 21, 1982.

On January 13, 1986, Margaret married Leonard J. Hackett. They spent their summers living and fishing at Okoboji. During the winter months they resided in Orange City. Leonard passed away on March 13, 1999, in Sioux City.

Margaret was a member of the Alton Reformed Church. She enjoyed cooking, baking, dancing, fishing, playing cards (May I), and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Arthur and Sally Oordt, of Spirit Lake; a daughter and her husband, Star and Phil Van Gelder, of Orange City; five grandchildren, Tim Oordt, Suzanne Oordt, Schuylar Oordt, Patrick Van Gelder and Pam De Haan; five great-grandchildren, Andi Oordt, Larkin De Haan, Trenton De Haan, Braylon Van Gelder, and Blair Van Gelder. Margaret’s great-grandson, Kade De Haan, preceded her in death.
