Obituary for Mildred "Milly" Vander Maten

Mrs. Mildred (Milly) Vander Maten, age 88, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, February 16, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Monday, at 10:00am, at the church.

Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Milly was born on March 27, 1926, in Orange City, the daughter of Arie and Henrietta (Plender) Boone. She was raised in Sioux County and graduated from the Orange City High School.

On May 23, 1947, she married Johannes Vander Maten in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where she was a bookkeeper at the Farmers Elevator and for many years, at the Orange City Medical Clinic. They later moved to Boyden, where she was employed by Beyer Auction and Realty and Van Bruggen and Vande Vegte Accounting. “Hans” passed away on April 10, 1984, in Orange City, after more than 36 years of marriage.

In February of 2011, Milly moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community and in January of 2015, she transferred to the Prairie Ridge Care Center, both in Orange City.

She was currently a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City but had belonged to the First Reformed Church in Boyden for many years. She sang with the Senior Saints and volunteered at her churches and at Village Northwest in Sheldon.

Survivors include her three children, Judy Smit, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Robert Vander Maten, and his wife, Joleen, of Lakeland, Florida; and Lois Vander Maten, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; six grandchildren, Amy (Chris) Sharp, Brian (Nicole) Smit, Chris Smit, Deidra (Trent) Hughes, Jackie (Chris) Stressman, and Joshua (Kathryn) Vander Maten; and ten great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Dann Smit; two brothers and their wives, Henry and Alyda Boone and Lawrence and Nellie and Cathy Boone; and a sister and her husband, Dorothy and Russ Te Grotenhuis.
