Obituary for Herman H. Langstraat
Mr. Herman Langstraat, age 100, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at the Sanford Medical Center in Sheldon.
There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, February 10, at 10:30am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. David Powers will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Newkirk Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service on Tuesday, at 9:30am, at the church.
Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the CHURCH.
Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Herman was born on September 17, 1914, in Lynn Township, the son of Henry P. and Anna Marie (Scholten) Langstraat. He was raised north of Newkirk and attended country school through the eighth grade.
On March 19, 1937, he married Grace Uittenbogaard in Hospers. They were blessed with seven children, Shirley, Rodney, Darlene, Beverly, Robert, Glenda, and Bradley. Grace passed away on August 23, 1956, in Sheldon. He married Winifred (Zwagerman) Vaas on May 31, 1970 in Newkirk. They farmed north of Newkirk until they retired to Orange City in 1988. They enjoyed traveling and wintering in Arizona. Winifred passed away on September 30, 2000, in Orange City. Herman later moved into the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City and then in 2011, he became a resident of the Sanford Senior Care.
“Herm” farmed his entire life. He and his good friends, John Blom and Jim Cleveringa, ran the Newkirk Trap Shoot for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing a good game of cards.
Survivors include his children, Shirley Goering, of New Ulm, Minnesota; Rodney Langstraat, of Newkirk; Darlene (Ken) Harskamp, of Ida Grove; Beverly (Gene) Van Berkel, of Sioux Center; Glenda (Gary) Jager, of George; and Brad Langstraat, of Jackson, Minnesota; fourteen grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are Winifred’s children, Bennet (Twyla) Vaas, of Orange City; Karlene (Rod) Van’t Hof, of Sioux Center; Daryl (Ruth) Vaas, of Greeley, Colorado; and Eulyn (Owen) Dykshorn, of Sioux Center; twelve step-grandchildren; 29 step-great-grandchildren; and six step-great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Rensink, of Sheldon; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Uittenbogaard, of Lake Park; and Christine Kroon, of Rock Rapids; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Grace; his wife Winifred; his son, Bob Langstraat; a son-in-law, Verlin Goering; a daughter-in-law, Alma Langstraat; a granddaughter, and her husband, Diane (Wade) Pullman; a grandson-in-law, Brian Vander Schaaf; two brothers and their wives, Peter (Tracie) Langstraat and Lester “Ted” (Alice) Langstraat; three sisters and their husbands, Johanna (Lawrence) Den Hartog, Nellie Langstraat, and Harriet (Elmer) Zordrager; and a brother-in-law, Bernie Rensink.
Memorials will be directed to Words of Hope.
