Obituary for William "Bill" Vander Maten

Mr. William Vander Maten, age 90, of Hull, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, February 9, at 11:00am, at the Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleburg. The Rev. Stephen Breen will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Sheridan Township Cemetery near Boyden. There will be a family prayer service on Monday, at 9:30am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the funeral home.

William was born on November 5, 1924, at Alton, the son of Herman and Hattie (Van Oort) Vander Maten. He was raised at Alton until the age of five, when his family moved to a farm south of Boyden. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

On January 25, 1949, he married Ann Marie Sterk in Sheldon. They made their home on the family farm south of Boyden. In 1983, they moved into Boyden, and on February 17, 2014, they became residents of Aspen Heights Assisted Living in Hull. Besides farming, “Bill” was also a Sioux County Supervisor for sixteen years.

Mr. Vander Maten was a member of the Free Grace Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory and taught Sunday school and catechism classes. He also served on several community boards of directors. In addition, he belonged to the Kiwanis and the William Monster American Legion Post, both in Boyden.

Survivors include his wife of more than 66 years; five children and their spouses, Mary Vander Maten and John Peterson, of Fairfax, Virginia; Helen and Coby Shaw, of Marietta, Georgia; Barbara and Randy Oostra, of Holland, Ohio; Linda Vander Maten and David Ritsema, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Wayne and Jan Vander Maten, of Sheldon; sixteen grandchildren, William (Christina) Vanderson, Anne Vanderson (Patrick Williams), David (Andrea) Vanderson, John A. Vanderson, Daniel Shaw, Michael Shaw, Julie (Daniel) Audia, Drew (Katelyn) Oostra, Tyler (Jodi) Oostra, Carson (Caitlin) Oostra, Davis Ritsema, Mark Ritsema, Wade (Abbie) Vander Maten, Justine (Justin) Draayer, Josh Vander Maten, and Whitney Vander Maten; thirteen great-grandchildren; four sisters and their husbands, Jenieva Kastein, of Rock Rapids; Lucia and Chasper Vander Ploeg, of Hospers; and Hermina and Eugene Beernink and Kaye and Herbert Kuyper, all of Sioux Center; a brother and his wife, Herman and Marilyn Vander Maten, of Surprise, Arizona; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Vander Maten, and a brother-in-law, Wilbur Harmelink, both of Orange City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and their husbands, Allie and Myron Korver, Gertrude and Bill Huisman, and Harriet Harmelink; two brothers, Johannes Vander Maten and John Vander Maten; and a brother-in-law, Peter Kastein.

Memorials will be directed to the Free Grace Reformed Church for the Middleburg Missionary Fund.
