Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Alma Ruth was born on July 27, 1941, in rural Hospers, the daughter of Edward and Alice (Nettinga) De Boer. She was raised at Newkirk, where she graduated from high school in 1958. She then was employed in the Sioux County Treasurer’s Office for three years.
On May 31, 1961, she married Rodney Langstraat at the Newkirk Reformed Church. They renewed their vows there forty years later.
The Langstraats farmed north of Newkirk, where Alma was a homemaker. She was also a master gardener and shared many flower arrangements at their church and with others. In addition, she was a great cook, who was a prize winner at the Iowa State Fair. She enjoyed reading, embroidering, traveling, especially to other states, and watching volleyball and basketball games of Northwestern College in Orange City.
Nana loved spending time with her grandchildren and supporting them in their many activities. She sewed quilts for her grandsons as graduation gifts.
She was a lifelong member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where she was involved in the women’s activities, and she and Rod participated in work projects. She recently joined the Coffee Break Bible Study.
She volunteered on the Sioux County Republican Central Committee, the Greater Sioux County Genealogy Society, and Justice for All. The Hospers/Newkirk Historical Society benefited from Alma’s contributions.
Alma and Rod were winter Texans and looked forward to spending time with their friends at the Mission/Bell Recreational Vehicle Park. She lived her entire life within one mile of her birthplace in Sioux County.
Survivors include her husband of more than 53 years, Rod; three daughters and their husbands, Gail and Arlan Van Grouw, of Orange City; Gina and Michael Pitsenberger, of Dyer, Indiana; and Amy and Jay Solsma, of Sanborn; grandchildren, Janet and Jonathon Taves; Troy, Kent, and Logan Pitsenberger, and Blake and Claire Solsma; two sisters, Marge Giese, of Sioux City; and Vera, and her husband, Norbert Bradley, of Lenox; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Adeline and Audley Dolphin, of Hospers.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Cornelia Van Hal, and a brother, David De Boer.
