Obituary for Katherine B. Muilenburg

Mrs. Katherine Muilenburg, age 93, of Hospers, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the Sanford Medical Center in Sheldon.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, February 4, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Milton Sikkema and the Rev. Russell Muilenburg will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hospers Cemetery. There will be a prayer service on Wednesday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the funeral home.

Katherine Berdena was born on March 10, 1921, in rural Sheldon, the daughter of Frank and Hermina (Rozeboom) Roetman. She was raised in the Archer/Sanborn area. She attended a country school by Archer and graduated from the Sanborn High School.

On February 9, 1943, she married Ivan H. Muilenburg at the bride’s home. They made their home in Hospers, where she was a homemaker. Ivan passed away on May 13, 1997, in Hospers.

In 2010, Katherine became a resident of the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon. In December of 2014, she transferred to the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

She was a member of the Hospers Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday school and catechism classes for many years and served as an officer in the women’s organizations. She started each day by reading her Bible and praying for her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Muilenburg was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed reading and playing cards and games. She had been a 4-H leader, a member of the Red Hat Society, and a charter member of the Hospers-Newkirk Historical Society. She assisted with Dinner Date in Hospers and helped start the Community Chest there.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter and her husband, Charlotte and Daryl Du Bois, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a daughter-in-law, Wilma “Billie” Muilenburg, of Hospers; five grandchildren, Ben Muilenburg, Russell Muilenburg, Heather Moyer, Ken Du Bois, and Andy Du Bois; sixteen great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Roetman, of Hospers, and Alyda Roetman, of Sheldon.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert Muilenburg; and four brothers, Lammert, Bernard, Howard, and Benjamin Roetman.

Memorials will be directed to the Christian Retirement Home.
