Mr. James Filarski, age 88, of Hospers, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2015, at the Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, February 2, at 10:30am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. Debra Rensink will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the funeral home.

James Paul was born on November 23, 1926, in Sheldon, the son of Christof and Johanna (Van Drie) Filarski. He was raised at Sheldon, where he graduated from high school. At the end of World War II, he served in the United States Navy.

On October 28, 1949, he married Thelma Theresa Roghair at the Alton Reformed Church. For many years, they made their home in Alton, where he was a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry. Later, they moved to Hospers. Thelma passed away on April 13, 2009, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

On December 10, 2014, he became a resident of the Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.

Jim had attended the Alton Reformed Church and the Hospers Presbyterian Church. He was a faithful listener to the radio ministry of Pastor Salem at the First Baptist Church in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

Survivors include his son and his wife, James and Julie Filarski, of Walnut, California; three grandchildren, Mikhail, of Walnut; and Eve Shankim and Seth Hanson, both of Omaha, Nebraska; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Joan Roghair, of Alton; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Hanson; his former son-in-law, Douglas Hanson; a brother, Frederick Filarski; two sisters, Eva Meyer and Esther Pearey; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Memorials will be directed to the broadcast ministry of Pastor Salem.
