Hawarden Independent, September 25, 1947

D. M. Morgan, 71, one of Hawarden's oldest business men, died at the Methodist hospital in Sioux City at 5:15 last Friday afternoon following an operation. He had been in poor health for the past few months. The latter part of August he submitted to a minor operation, and on Tuesday of last week a major operation was performed.

Funeral services were held at the Associated church at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon with Rev. Noel Orcutt in charge. Interment was in Grace Hill cemetery. Business houses in Hawarden were closed during the funeral.

Dennis Michael Morgan, son of John & Rosena Morgan, was born May 22, 1876, at Darlington, Wis. At an early age he moved to Rock Rapids with his family. He came to Hawarden when a young man of 25. He was married to Marie Jacobe in Hawarden, August 30, 1904.

Mr. Morgan operated a billiard hall here in partnership with P. M. Luchsinger shortly after he came to Hawarden. Then 43 years ago he engaged in the hotel business. He and H. M. Handy bought what was known as the Depot hotel. Three or four years later Mr. Morgan bought Mr. Handy's interest and Mr. Luchsinger became his partner. In 1917 the Depot hotel was renamed the Gladstone hotel and moved to its present location.

For a number of years Mr. Morgan, in partnership with M. Kelley, also operated a farm near Hawarden. Following the death of Mr. Luchsinger in 1927, Mr. Morgan sold his farm interest and became the sole owner of the hotel. Ever since, Mr. & Mrs. Morgan have operated the business.

Survivors include the widow and one son, John; three sisters, Mrs. Florence McCawffrey of Vancouver, Wash.; Margaret Morgan of Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs. Rose Slaughter of San Francisco and three brothers, Matt and C. E. Morgan of Hawarden and H. W. Morgan of Britton, S.D.

"Den" Morgan was widely known through this territory. In his early years in Hawarden he took an active part in sports. While horse racing was a popular sport here, he ran horses. Baseball was another of his favorite sports and he did much in supporting a club in past years. Always interested in people less fortunate, he frequently helped people who were in need. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen and Royal Neighbors lodge.

Long list of out-of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral.
