Hawarden Independent, June 7, 1956

Marie Morgan, 74, one of Hawarden's oldest business women died at the Hawarden hospital Monday morning after having suffered a stroke at her home May 23.

Marie Jacobe, daughter of Josephine & Frank Jacobe, was born April 17, 1882, at Peterson, Iowa. At the age of three months she, with her parents, moved to Hawarden. She attended the Hawarden schools and for several years worked for Dr. A. W. Quigly. She was one of Hawarden's first telephone operators.

On August 30, 1904, she married D. M. Morgan. To this union was born one son, John.

Fifty-two years ago the Morgans engaged in the hotel business. Mr. Morgan and H.M. Handy bought what was known as the Depot hotel. Three or four years later Mr. Morgan bought Mr. Handy's interest and P. M. Luchsinger became his partner. In 1917 the Depot hotel was renamed the Gladstone hotel and moved to its present location.

Mrs. Morgan continued to operate the hotel following the death of her husband in September, 1947. Also preceding her in death were her parents and two sisters, Mrs. Molly Mason and Mrs. Alice Muilenburg.

Survivors include one son, John, of Hawarden; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Dunham and Mrs. Margaret Wilkison of Hawarden and Mrs. Isabel Fogel of Rubidoux, CA; two brothers, Ben Jacobe of Hawarden and E. H. Jacobe of Long Beach, CA, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 1:30 at the Barnard Funeral Home and at 2 o'clock at the Associated church, Rev. John Thorns officiating.

Members of the Hawarden Royal Neighbors lodge, of which Mrs. Morgan served as treasurer for more than 40 years, will attend the services in a body.
