Born: March 8, 1927, Sutherland, Iowa
Died: April 2, 1997 Sioux City, Iowa

Phillip John Hoffman, 70, of Alton died Wed. April 2, at a Sioux City hospital. Services were at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton on Sat. with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial was at St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Floyd American Legion Post 200.

Hoffman was born March 8, 1927, in Sutherland, the son of Phillip C. and Florence A. (Henrich) Hoffman. He moved with his family to Alton in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a courier of official messages and documents in Europe.

He married Lorraine Chapman on June 12, 1947, in Struble. The couple farmed near Alton. He also worked as a crew foreman for Midwest Precast in Orange City during the 1970s. In 1980 they moved to Alton.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Barbara and her husband Curtis Brown of Loudon, TN, Elaine and husband Michael Klein Sr. of Sioux City, Debra and husband Cliff Morren and Janet Hoffman, all of Omaha NE. and Susan and husband Neal Hall of Corpus Christi, TX; three sons and their wives, William C. and Margarita of California City, CA. Phillip Jr. and Debbie of Jacksonville, FL, and Robert S. and Mitzi of Alton; 14 grandchildren, Mark and Michelle Brown, Cynthia Munson, Jason, Thomas, Kathryn and Megan Hoffman, Cindy, Michael Jr. and Andrew Klein, Amanda and Sarah Morren, Adrian and Corey Young; a brother and his wife, Edward S. and Florence of Winnetka, ILL; and a sister and husband, Evelyn and Richard Donovan of Walnut Creek, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
