Patricia Mae Steensma, 66, Sanborn, died Saturday, November 3, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after a courageous fight against leukemia.

Services were Tuesday, November 6, at Cornerstone United Reformed Church in Sanborn, with Dr. Mark Beach officiating. Burial was at Roseland Cemetery, under the direction of Sanborn Funeral Home.

Patricia Steensma, daughter of Edward and Anna (Vande Vegte) Baartman, was born June 30, 1941, at her parents home in Boyden. She spent her childhood years in Boyden and attended Boyden Public School. She married John Steensma on March 30, 1962, at First Reformed Church in Boyden.

They made their home in Sanborn. She joyfully performed the duties of a homemaker and was a wonderful mother. Once her children were raised, she enjoyed keeping herself busy by cleaning businesses and homes.

Spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was important to her. The family took their annual vacations together for many years. She loved getting together with her coffee group and going to lunch with her daughters. She attended a women’s Bible study for many years and was a member of Cornerstone United Reformed Church in Sanborn. Hobbies included gardening and flowers, scrap booking, quilting and crafts. She enjoyed helping others.

Survivors include her husband, John Steensma of Sanborn; four daughters, Marsha and Dave Elgersma of Sanborn, Carla and Marv Vis of Hull, Sharon and Tom Adams of Hartley, and Sue and Kevin Gonnerman of Sanborn; a son, Bryan Steensma of Sheldon; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a third one on the way; and three brothers, Kenneth and Shirley Baartman, Ed and Kathy Baartman and Allen and Bonnie Baartman.
