Harold Eugene Stephenson, 81, Alcester, South Dakota, died Sunday, July 1, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Services will be 10:30 A.M. today (Saturday, July 7) at United Methodist Church in Hawarden, with the Reverend Tim Walker officiating. Burial will be at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden, with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6149 of Alcester, South Dakota, and arrangements under the direction of Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Harold Stephenson, son of Harry and Julia (Jepsen) Stephenson, was born February 4, 1926, in Chatsworth. He attended school in Union County, South Dakota, and Sioux County. He graduated from Hawarden High School in 1944.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for Van Buskirk Construction for 15 years. He helped to build the Kansas Turnpike and Norton Dam. He started farming the family farm west of Alcester in 1967. He married Phyllis Jurgensen Warner on September 15, 1972. He retired from farming in 1990, but continued to live on the family farm until moving to Alcester in 2005.

He was a lifetime member and past chaplain of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6149 in Alcester and a member of United Methodist Church in Hawarden. He loved being with family and having coffee with friends.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Stephenson of Alcester, South Dakota; four sons, David and Michelle Warner of Alcester, South Dakota, Darrell and Rachele Warner of Sioux Center, Tim and Cathy Warner of Mountain Grove, Missouri, and Terry and Stephanie Warner of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a daughter, Cindy Peterson of Alcester, South Dakota; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Warner on March 20, 2004.
