Stan Surma, 79, Doon, died Saturday, October 28, at Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley.

Services were Wednesday, November 1, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rock Valley. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery in Doon, under the direction of Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Stan Surma, son of Wladislaus and Julia (Griener) Surma, was born June 9, 1927, in Pietrycze, Poland. He served in the Polish Army Unit under the U.S. Army Command at the end of World War II. He came to the United States, to the Doon area, in 1949.

He married Grace Mantel on August 12, 1957, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alvord. They lived in Doon, where he owned and operated Stan’s Shoe Store until his retirement in 2003.

He was active in northwest Iowa, being a past member of Central Lyon School District Board of Education, American Legion Post 476 in Doon, Doon City Council, Doon Fire Department and U.S. AF Defense Team-Ground Observer Corps. He also was an avid stamp collector.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Surma of Doon; two sons, Carl and Penny Surma of Doon, and Joseph and Patricia Surma of Waterloo; four daughters, Mary and John FitzGibbon of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Penny and Douglas Toay of Waverly, Eva and Kevin Lowerre of Butler, Pennsyvania, and Amy Surma of Creston; 14 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Surma and Karol Surma.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
